Screen Media Selection Fundamentals

Choosing the right screen media is critical to screening efficiency, capacity and operating cost. The screen media is the wearing surface that actually separates the material — selecting the wrong type leads to poor efficiency, excessive wear and high operating costs.

Screen Media Types Overview

1. Woven Wire Mesh

Woven wire mesh is the most common screen media type, made from steel wires woven together to create apertures. Available in square, slotted and harp (crimped) configurations.

Square Mesh:

  • Highest open area of all media types
  • Ideal for dry, free-flowing materials
  • Available in stainless steel for corrosive applications
  • Typical applications: sand, gravel, minerals, food processing

Slotted Mesh:

  • Slots instead of squares — better for sizing elongated particles
  • Prevents pegging and blocking better than square mesh
  • Common in coal, salt and mineral processing

Harp (Crimped) Mesh:

  • Pre-crimped wires with large open area
  • Self-cleaning action reduces blinding
  • Better for sticky or wet materials
  • Higher strength than plain square weave

Rubber Screen Panels

Rubber screen panels are molded panels that bolt or clip to screen deck support structures. They offer excellent wear resistance and are particularly effective for wet, abrasive materials.

Advantages:

  • Excellent abrasion resistance
  • Good for wet, sticky materials
  • Reduced noise compared to steel
  • Molded profiles can be optimized for specific applications

Limitations:

  • Lower open area than wire mesh
  • Higher cost than standard wire mesh
  • Temperature limitations (not suitable for hot materials)
Screen Media Types

Screen Media Types — Wire Mesh, Rubber and Polyurethane

Polyurethane Screens

Polyurethane screens offer a balance of wear resistance and open area. They are particularly popular for fine screening (below 30mm) and dewatering applications.

Advantages:

  • High wear resistance for fine particle sizes
  • Self-cleaning properties reduce blinding
  • Lightweight — easier handling than steel
  • Corrosion resistant
  • Long service life in many applications

Limitations:

  • More expensive than rubber or wire
  • Temperature limitations (typically max 80-100°C)
  • Limited to certain aperture sizes and configurations

Punch Plate

Punch plate (perforated plate) consists of flat steel plate with punched holes. It is used for heavy-duty scalping, large aperture sizing and in feeder applications.

Advantages:

  • Very high strength and durability
  • Handles large feed sizes and heavy loads
  • Good for impact and abrasion resistance
  • Simple to replace

Limitations:

  • Lower open area than wire mesh
  • Limited aperture range
  • Heavier than other media types

Selection Criteria Summary

Media Type Best For Aperture Range
Square Wire Dry, free-flowing materials 1-100mm
Slotted Wire Elongated particles, prevention of pegging 1-50mm slots
Harp Wire Sticky, wet materials, high capacity 3-100mm
Rubber Wet, abrasive materials 6-100mm
Polyurethane Fine screening, dewatering 0.5-30mm
Punch Plate Heavy-duty scalping, large feed 10-150mm
